What to Expect in Your 6 Hours of SGI In-Car Lessons

Your 6 hours of SGI in-car driving lessons are an important step toward becoming a safer, more confident driver in Saskatchewan.

Student preparing for an SGI in-car driving lesson in Regina

Most students complete their in-car training in three separate 2-hour sessions. Each session builds on the previous one and helps students develop safer driving habits, better decision-making skills, and more confidence for everyday driving and future Class 5 road test preparation.

Every student learns at a different pace. The exact lesson order may vary depending on your experience, confidence level, traffic, weather, road conditions, and instructor assessment.

Before Your First In-Car Lesson

Before your first lesson, please make sure you are ready on time and prepared to drive. Your instructor will explain the lesson plan, answer basic questions, and help you feel comfortable before starting.

Please bring:

  • Your valid Saskatchewan learner’s licence or driver’s licence
  • Glasses or contact lenses if required on your licence
  • Comfortable footwear for driving
  • A calm and focused attitude
  • Any questions you may have about your lesson

Your first lesson is not about being perfect. It is about learning safely, understanding the vehicle, and building confidence step by step.

How the 6 Hours Are Usually Scheduled

Most students complete their SGI in-car driving lessons in three separate 2-hour sessions:

  • Session 1: 2 hours
  • Session 2: 2 hours
  • Session 3: 2 hours

Total: 6 hours

This format gives students enough time to practise, ask questions, improve between lessons, and prepare for different driving situations.

In some cases, the lesson plan may be adjusted based on the student’s driving level. For example, a student with no experience may need more time on basic control, while a student with some experience may move more quickly into city driving, parking, gravel road driving, or highway preparation.

Your first 2-hour in-car lesson is designed to help you feel comfortable, safe, and prepared before driving in real traffic. We start with the basics, including how to get ready before driving, how to adjust your seat and mirrors, and how to understand the vehicle controls.

Once you are ready, we begin practising basic driving skills in a calm and controlled way. Depending on your comfort level and progress, this may include low-speed driving, basic parking practice, intersections, lane positioning, and safe decision-making in traffic.

What students may practice in the first 2 hours:

  • Pre-drive safety checks
  • Seat, mirror, and steering setup
  • Starting, stopping, and basic vehicle control
  • Shoulder checks and blind spot awareness
  • Basic reversing and low-speed driving
  • Introduction to intersections and right-of-way
  • Basic parking practice
  • Safe scanning and decision-making habits
  • Introduction to city driving when appropriate

The second 2-hour in-car lesson usually focuses on helping students become more comfortable outside regular city driving. Depending on the student’s confidence, traffic, weather, and road conditions, this lesson may include highway driving, rural driving, and gravel road practice.

Students learn how driving changes at higher speeds and on different road surfaces. The focus is on safe speed control, proper following distance, smooth lane changes, safe merging, hazard awareness, and adjusting to Saskatchewan road conditions.

Students can also review the official SGI Driver’s Handbook better to understand Saskatchewan driving rules and road safety expectations.

What students may practice in the second 2 hours:

  • Highway entry and exit
  • Merging with traffic
  • Safe lane changes
  • Following distance at higher speeds
  • Passing when safe and legal
  • Driving on divided and undivided highways
  • Construction zone awareness
  • Wildlife and emergency awareness
  • Gravel road driving basics
  • Speed control on loose or uneven roads
  • Curves, railway crossings, and rural road hazards
  • Safe scanning and decision-making

The final 2-hour in-car lesson usually focuses on reviewing important city driving skills and helping students feel more prepared for safe independent driving. Depending on the student’s progress, this lesson may include one-way streets, parking practice, intersection review, and overall driving performance.

Students review common city driving situations such as turns, stop signs, traffic lights, crosswalks, lane positioning, pedestrian awareness, and parking. The instructor may also provide helpful road test preparation tips based on the student’s overall performance.

What students may practice in the final 2 hours:

  • One-way street driving basics
  • Left and right turns on one-way streets
  • Stop signs, yield signs, and traffic lights
  • Crosswalks and pedestrian awareness
  • Shared lanes, bus lanes, and bicycle lane awareness
  • Lane positioning and safe turning
  • Parallel, back-in, and perpendicular parking review
  • Uphill and downhill parking
  • Defensive driving and hazard awareness
  • Road test preparation tips
  • Overall city driving review
